Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Steud germplasm collection, conservation and evaluation

The following study was carried out in order to establish and conserve a broad germplasm base of the multiple use tree Gliricidia sepium. To date,56 natural and 31 derived provenance have been collected and documented. Seed is made available internationally through NFTA and CFI for their evaluation. Germplasm banks were established in Costa Rica and Hawaii to conserve germplasm and to serve as breeding and clonal material for future studies. Four provenances trials were established with the initial collections, primarily from Costa Rica, in a wide range of environments in order to assess the amount of genetic variation and to identify fast-growing provenances. The evaluation of this relatively limited collection clearly indicates the existence of significant variation in growth rates and subsequent yield. ILCA 1 and 8 appear to be the most vigorous provenances which can be recommended for a wide range of environments. A clonal seed orchard of the most promising provenance in terms of growth, ILCA 1, 2, 3, 8, 21 and NFTA 566 and 568, should be established for second generation evaluation and selection. Future collections of G. sepium germplasm by CFI and CATIE are planned for 1986
