Survey of fuelwood use in selected sites of Central America

The following results are based primarily on interviews with woodfuel users in four areas: San Francisco El Alto (SFEA) of Guatemala, the Danlí region of Honduras, and several rural towns in the San José Valley and Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. In all of these places households are the greatest users of fuelwood, and for most households, woodfuel is the most important use of trees. Except in the San José Valley, almost all households are heavily dependent on fuelwood for cooking, and in San Francisco El Alto, also for home heating. Though industrial use of fuelwood is not nearly as great as household use, it is significant, especially in the Danlí region where there is a large industry using firewood for drying coffee
