The problem of the ever decreasing supply of firewood in El Salvador is discussed, together with the selection of species which could best fulfill the demand. Among the negative but very important factors hindering the solution of these problems are the very slow return on capital invested in reforestation programs, socio-economic implications, and the rapid increase in population
