Applicability of agro-forestry systems

At present agro-forestry is suffering from oversale and wishful thinking rather than being based on an objective analysis of what it can and cannot offer. To build up the scientific credibility of the discipline and to provide a useful instrument for those who want to promote agro-forestry practices, researchers should always compare the potential of agro-forestry with that of monocultures. Such comparison must carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each system from both biological and socio-economic perspectives. To facilitate such a comparison, a recapitulation of qualitative and a few quantitative assessments, based on Costa Rican experiences, a literature review, and discussions with practicing agro-foresters, is presented. It is hoped that these assessments -to be refined on a continous basis- will serve as guidelines to research themes, for promotion and extension campaigns, and for evaluations a posteriori.
