The control of run-off and erosion by silvo-pastoral systems

The idea of using natural resources in an appropiated way, in agreement with basic ecological principles is frequently reiterated, each time with greater force, in many technical fields. One of the serious problems that occurs in pastures is soil compaction following grazing, especially in hot zones with high precipitation and clayey soils. The following experiment has been designed to evaluate run-off and consequent soil loss in two associations of trees with pasture. The objectives are to determine the amount of run-off in steeply sloped pastures, situated in the experimental watershed area of La Suiza and to evaluate the influence of poro (Erythrina poeppigiana) and laurel (Cordia allidora) upon infiltration and run-off when they are grown in pastures. Measurements will be taken after each rainfall in order to determine the correlations between rainfall intensity, run-off and the differen treatments. The treatments will be: 1) Bare soil; 2) Pasture; 3) Pasture plus poro; 4) Pasture plus laurel; 5) Unmanaged densely overgrown land. The experimental designed consists of three repetitiones of the five treatments.
