The promotion of agroforestry techniques in semi-humid zones in Honduras

Some new techniques have been introduced in Honduras by PNUD/FAO/HON/77/006 Project, "Integrated Management of Watersheds". Among the principal objectives of this project, which has areas of action in the Omoa mountains and around Lake Yojoa, are the protection of the soil and water resources in mountainous areas and, specifically, the protection of the existing commercial forest. All of this work requires intensive promotion. The agroforestry techniques which are being encouraged at present are the following: the planting of laurel and later also guama (Luga vera) in new coffee, cocoa and "Pimienta gorda" plantations in plots which irrigations ditches along the sides and with individual terraces; reforestation by means of the "Taungya" system, within an existing "milpa" and/or the planting of annual crops for 1 to 3 years. In the end of this document is the discussion.
