Socio-economic importance of goat production

In this chapter, the socioeconomic importance of goats in temperate, and more particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, is discussed. The main tropics are the place of goats in farming systems (temperate regions, tropical regions), contribution of goats to employment, national income and gross national product, attributes of goats, socio-economic aspects of goat management (nomadism, transhumance, mixed farmers), economic aspects of rearing goats (Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Cyprus, Venezuela, Peru), contribution to rural nutrition and gaps in knowledge
