Resultados de levante de novillos en varios sistemas de praderas en la altillanura plana de los llanos orientales de Colombia
This paper reports results from the Centro Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria (CNIA) at Carimagua. Pasture evaluations are carried out using continuous grazing with zebu-criollo crossbred cattle of 150 kg initial liveweight. The animals have constant access to mineral supplements. Stocking rates are adjusted according to grass growth in the wet and dry seasons. Pastures are established with a minimum of fertilizer (usually 50 kg P2O5/ha and K, Mg and S according to the requirements of the species). Maintenance fertilizer applications are usually at one third of the initial rate. The predominant native species at Carimagua and their dry matter yields under continuous grazing at different stocking rates are presented. Attempts to improve protein levels by feeding urea with cassava flour or molasses have proved uneconomical. However, the use of Pueraria phaseoloides (kudzu) in a "protein bank" seem very promising, raising production by 60-70 percent per animal and by 100-300 percent per ha. Work with Brachiaria decumbens has shown that greater animal output can be obtained with this species than with native pastures. The main advantage seems to be in terms of stocking rate and quality of the forage. Other species evaluated by Carimagua have included Melinis minutiflora, Hyparrhenia rufa, Paspalum plicatulum and Panicum maximum, but none of them has shown advantages under conditions at Carimagua and attention has been focused on Andropogon gayanus
