Sistemas de producción de leche y carne para los llanos occidentales venezolanos

The project described in this paper was designed to generate technology for the mid-western plains and similar areas of the country. In view of the national shortage of concentrate foods, the possibility of using European type cattle in intensive production systems was discarded and emphasis given instead to improving the existing dual purpose system, based on crossbred cattle on pastures. The cattle which predominate in dairying areas of the country are known as criollo perijanero (CP) and are crosses with varying degrees of zebu, criollo and European breed inheritance. The project consists of three stages, starting with improvement of the traditional system using the CP cow and later dealing with the ½ European descendants of the same cows and a more intensive management system. An economic evaluation of the system, excluding costs of land, showed an internal rate of return of about 25 percent. It was concluded that the systems approach to research is essential if national milk production is to be increased. A model which increases productivity by 100-200 percent, compared with the traditional system, is described. Future research must be better integrated in order to develop appropriate technology, using higher grade crossbred cows and improving use of available feed resources, including legumes
