DHI dairy goat records from Alpine, Nubian, Saanen and Toggenburg does which kidded in California herds from 1970 to 1978 were used for genetic evaluation of does and bucks. Other breeds were not included because of insufficient numbers of records. Production for only the first 305 days were included. Data were pre-corrected for age-season-parity effects, as previous work in this laboratory has shown that all three are major sources of variation in dairy goat records. Best Linear Unbiased Predictions (BLUP) of genetic merit were obtained using a model which included random effects of sire and doe/sire, and fixed effects of herd, year and breed. Herd x year interaction was not included because of the resulting loss of sire linkage between herds. The ranges for sire solutions for milk and fat were - 140 to + 168 and - 5.4 to + 7.7 kg, respectively. In spite of the relatively low average number of daughters per size, bucks with high Predicted Difference and moderately low standard erros were identified in each breed. A goal of future work is to evaluate more currently active sires
