A large herd of pedigree British Saanen goats has been kept at the National Institute for Research in Darying (NIRD) for over 45 years to provide models for many aspects of research into dairying. In recent years in addition to this research the herd has been developed along more commercial lines to investigate problems of commercial goat farming in the UK and to establish some income from the herd. No large organizations exist with any involvement in goat products and therefore processing and marketing is organised by individual goat farmers. Within the research herd of 200 goats at the NIRD 50 are milked at present with plans to increase this number to 70 in the near future. The goats are milked in a Fullwood 12/24 side by side parlour with recording jars at each milking point. About 3500 litres of milk is produced per annum, most of which is sold providing a return of about 1200. Some of the milk is pasteurised and packed in heat sealed cartons and some is sold unpasteurised in bulk. Most of the milk is deep frozen before sale. Outlets include local milk-round dairies, cheese and yoghurt manufacturing dairies and health food shops. The majority of the cartoned liquid milk is sold to cow milk allergy sufferers. Improvements in feeding and housing have allowed economies to be made in both costs and labour - an important feature with a herd of this nature
