Seasonal influences on the sexual activity of bucks as well as on quantity and quality of semen are well-known. The object of this study was to obtain indications whether sufficient semen with a normal conception rate can be processed during the off breeding season. Semen of 9 Saanen and Swiss Alpine bucks was collected and deep-frozen twice weekly during winter (October-December 1979) and spring (March-May 1980) using Tris diluent. At the beginning of the trial seven bucks were 7-9 and two 19-20 months old. Inseminations were carried out alternatively with semen collected during winter 0.33 ml in favour of the winter semen collection. The average production of semen straws didn't differ, whereas the number of useable ejaculates was significantly higher during winter collections. The conception rate using semen from collections during the off-breeding season (spring) was equal to that from winter semen. There were 108 AI in winter and 77 in spring. Our study shows that semen processing in spring can be worth-while. The number of useable ejaculates from spring collections was smaller, but the reduced sexual activity during spring was seen by less mounting especially amongst the younger bucks
