This study is part of the Rocky Mountain Forest Experiment Station program to find effective, economical and environmentally safe method of converting chaparral to brush-grass mosaics, which significantly increases water and forage yields, reduces fire hazard and may improve wildlife habitat. To date, the only environmentally safe mean of controlling shrubs is the root plow. However, the topographic conditions and the rocky character of the Arizona habitat limits its use. An alternative method is to follow burning and seeding with browsing by goats. Conversion of chaparral by goat browsing will require of good management to protect the area during the critical period of grass establishment. Results indicate that it may be possible to control shrub cover sufficiently to increase water yield
