A total of 117 observations on the pre-weaning growth of SRD (Sem Raca Definida, or, without breed description) goats and Morada Nova sheep were analyzed. These animals were maintained on 3 types of pastures in the Sertao Central region of Ceara state in Brazil and the whole experiment continued over 3 years. The 3 types of pastures were: (a) native pastures of caatinga (small bushy trees), (b) cleared caatinga pastures and (c) cultivated buffel grass pastures. The General Linear Models procedure of at least square analysis was used and the data were adjusted for sex effects before analysis. The results showed that the growth of animals progressively declined from first to the third year. At birth, the two species produced off-spring of almost equal size but differences appeared around 28 days and sheep appeared to grow better till 84th day. Thereafter, goats appear to have picked up and they showed a distinctly better rate up to 112 days. The type of birth had the most profound effect and single born progeny was distinctly superior to multiple ones at all stages of growth. On an overall basis, there were no distinct differences between types of pastures during early stages of growth of kids and lambs up to 28 days. Thereafter, the cleared native pastures appeared best. The buffel grass pastures were only marginally, but consistently, better to native caatinga pastures. The interaction between pastures and species was of most interes to us, but there did not appear to be much interaction
