Proceedings

This study was conducted from January 1979, through June 1981. Bucks form five dairy goat breeds (Saanen, Nubian, Alpine, Toggenburg, La Mancha) were each collected once a week, with a total of 52 animals included in the trial. Post-pubertal males were trained to serve an artificial vagina on either an estrus doe or buck false mount. Most males were collected at first exposure to the false mount. None required more than three exposures. During the first season only male false mounts were used, and little or no exposure to estrus females was allowed. During the second season, estrus females were used when available, and male false mounts were used during the off season. Reactionary libido times (time to first mount) were recorded in seconds for most of the survey. Semen evaluation consisted of volume, concentration, and initial motility. During the breeding season no difficulties were encountered in training males on male false mounts. Only three males required initial training on an estrus doe during the off season, but they subsequently worked on male false mounts. It was found that males collected on male false mounts during the breeding season exhibited more willingness to be collected on male false mounts during the off season. A high percentage of males collected on estrus females during breeding season could not be collected on male false mounts in the off season. However, when estrus in a female was artificially induced during the off season, all males, even those which had stopped working on false mounts mounted and ejaculated with normal reaction times, semen volume and spermatozoa concentration for that period of the year. It was noted that abstinence from sexual activity prior to training or collection enhanced libido. Although sexual satiation slightly increase reaction times, it did not seem to affect false mount preference
