Proceedings

A research was conducted to evaluate the most common diseases in dairy goat farms in the center of Mexico from 1978-1980. Our data demonstrated that the main problems in kids were pneumonia 21 percent, diarrhea 28 percent, starvation 35 percent and miscellaneous 16 percent (dystocia, enterotoxemia, accidents and unknown causes of death). In adults goats there were diagnosed the following diseases: Caseous lymphadenitis (CL), kerataconjuntivitis (KC), coccidiosis, ecthyma, mastitis, Johne's disease, caprine arthritis, caprine pneumonia, pregnancy toxemia and brucellosis as the major illnesses. The organisms isolated were Corynecbacterium ovis in CL which had a major importance in the goat industry (28 percent). KC was due to Chlamydia ovis. The major eimeria in coccidiosis were E. ninakolyakimoeva, E. arloingi and E. parva. In sore mouth no virus has been isolated. Mastitis was found mainly to be due to Streptococcus agalactiae and Caprine agalactiae was also demostrated. An acid resistant microorganism was the cause of Johne's disease. There has been no identification of the contagious agent in Caprine arthritis or in Caprine Pneumonia even to the present day. Pregnancy toxemia was due to poor management during the later stages of gestation and early lactation. Brucellosis is still, probably, the main disease because of the economical impact and human health complications. An extensive campaign has been applied to eradicate this major disease
