The first goats which came to Mexico arrived from Spain during the 16th century. The fundamental aim of the goat production at that time was to increase the numbers. There was very little effort at proper management of genetic improvement. The consequence was an extensive exploitation and the origin of the biotype called "Criollo". Unrestricted growth in numbers led to over-grazing, soil-erosion, deforestation, and health problems with some diseases such as brucellosis and tuberculosis being transmitted to humans by the goats. All these circunstances brought the disparagement of this species. At present, the concept of breeders and technicians has changed with an awareness of the importance of the goat as a contributor to the solution of problems of world food supply. Today, there are in Mexico about 9.5 million head of goats of different breeds, mainly "Criollo", Nubian, Saanen, Granadina, Alpine and some Toggenburg. The most important regions in the country for goat production are in the Northern and Central States of Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Oaxaca and Puebla. Goat meat production is on the order of 30 305 metric tons per year, and goat milk production is on the order of 280 million litters. The leather and dairy industries derived from goat products are growing. Most of the meat is consumed as "cabrito", that is the young kid at about one-month of age. The milk is mainly consumed as cheese and sweet products called "cajeta" or "dulce de leche"; and the leather is used in the manufacture of shoes, coats, wallets, purses, etc
