Fifty native does were studied under semi-intensive management. They were 4 to 5 years old and weighed 32 to 35 kg. The does were bred to Nubian and French Alpine males during the normal breeding season with kidding occurring in a dry season (60 days). They were grazed on Panicum maximum; Jacq and native legume with 400 g/day of concentrate (20 percent CP). The goats were hand milked in the morning after having been separated from their kids (12 to 16 h) and weaned at 87.5 days (group A) and 112 days (group B). Total milk production fluctuated between 12.9 and 104 kg (X:42.4 kg). Average daily production was 272 g without variation with type of kidding. The average lactation period was 154.9 days, being longer for does suckling a single kid than for those with more kids (163.7 vs 139.8 days). A similar situation occurred with goats weaned at 112 and 87.5 days (140.0 vs 185.2 days) respectively. Weaning time did not affect the daily production (X:281 vs 264) for A and B groups respectively, but total production increased from 37.8 to 50.1 kg . In another trial the production of milk in an intensive system with natural weaning of 54 native does fluctuated between 10.1 and 73.9 kg during lactations of 78 to 249 days. Average daily milk production was 214 g. When compared with another group of 76 does reared in a semi-intensive system the total production was significantly different (68.6 kg)
