Machine milking and mastitis - A review

A special effort is made in this review to consider machine milking in the correct perspective. Some aspects of the pathology of mastitis are discussed as well as the comparative evidence for the specific effects of machine milking. Other environmental factors which may act as contributory causes to mastitis are discussed so that machine milking may be considered in context. Some theoretical aspects of the relationship between machine milking and mastitis are considered i.e. a fundamental appraisal of the mechanism by which the machine may act as a predisposing factor. Some basic information concerning the anatomy of the teat and teat sphincter and the physical mechanism of the machine is also included
