Insect damage to seeds of garapa Apuleia leiocarpa (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae)

This study was undertaken to identify seed-infesting insects of Apuleia leiocarpa (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae), and to determine the amount and effect of their damage to the seeds. The material examined were 8000 pods and 14505 seeds, held in cages at 25°C and 60 percent RH for insect emergence. The species reared were Ormiscus vulgaris Jordam (Coleoptera: Anthribidae) and four new species: Acanthoscelides unguiculatus Kingsolver, 1982; A. ambopygus Kingsolver, 1982 and A. bilobatus Kingsolver, 1982 (Coleoptera: Bruchidae); and an undescribed, species of Lophopoeum (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). These insects damaged 23.76 ¦ 1.17 percent of the seeds. Species of Ormiscus and Acanthoscelides were found in 12.44 ¦ 0.42 percent of the seeds, and other insects were responsible for damage in 11.26 ¦ 0.94 percent. Bruchid damage resulted in an average seed weight loss of 37.33 ¦ 3.29 percent, and germination was reduced from an average of 88.5 ¦ 1.39 percent to 1.0 ¦ 0.37 percent
