Mexican fruit fly is persistent foe in eradication effort

The device shown on the cover is a McPhail trap, the principal device used in detection and quarantine for the Mexican fruit. Much more cumbersome and not nearly as effective as the trap used against other fruit flies, it has nevertheless proven the best available after decades of looking for substitutes. The necessity of using this unit (shown with bait still not dissolved) is only one of the things which makes eradication difficult and has helped the fly earn the name "superpest" which officials have attached to this latest invader
