Financial development and economic growth: Trinidad and Tobago, 1973-1978

Certain aspects of the development of the financial sector in Trinidad and Tobago over the period 1973-87 are examined in order to assess how far financial intermediation has progressed with economic growth, or how economic growth has influenced changes in the financial structure of the country. A review of the literature on the relationship between financial institutions and economic development precedes an investigation of the evidence for Trinidad and Tobago, which reveals positive correlation between the two. An examination, at the macroeconomic level, of the impact of financial intermediaries points to unclarity regarding the extent of aid to the growth process
