The prevalence of tuberculosis in dairy buffaloes

One hundred dairy buffaloes (50 individually raised and 50 raised in a herd) were tested for tuberculosis using old tuberculin and kaolin agglutination test. Fourteen buffaloes raised in a herd showed positive tuberculin and kaolin agglutination test reactions and were considered tuberculous. Six other buffaloes (three individually raised and three raised in a herd) showed increased. The kaolin agglutination test results were consistent with the tuberculin test reactions. All of the positive tuberculin test reactors showed marked increase in kaolin agglutination titers. The increase in titers observed in the six tuberculin test negative (suspects) buffaloes may indicate false negative tuberculin test reactions. The results obtained in this study showed that tuberculosis can be highly prevalent in dairy buffalo herds. The transmission and perpetuation of the infection is facilitated by the frequent contact between diseased and susceptible animals. This is not possible in buffaloes raised individually and consequently, the prevalence of the disease is low
