Economic importance of bovine tuberculosis in Nigeria

An estimate is made of the economic losses due to bovine tuberculosis in Nigeria. The estimates are based on actual recorded losses due to carcass and organ condemnations. A morbidity rate of 0.2 per cent with a case fatality rate of 1 per cent in a cattle population of 9.3 million, apart from losses due to chronic effects, were estimated. A conservative estimate of N14.24 million naira is lost annually due to bovine tuberculosis. The need for a national tuberculosis control and eradication programme is highlighted
