Relation of the bovine M blood group system with growth of Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus in whey
Quarter milk samples were collected from 20 M'positive (M'+) cows and 20 age-matched M' negative (M' - ) controls. Bacterial growth in whey was generally related to the inflammatory condition of the quarter as judged by increased somatic cell count, N-acetyl- D-glucosaminidase, serum albumin, antitrypsin and decreased lactose concentration or decreased quarter milk yield. Whey form M + cows stimulated replication of Streptococcus agalactiae. The replication rate of Staphylococcus aureus was only related to inflamatory changes in milk but not to the M' blood group factor
