Some aspects of the epidemiology and economics of important diseases of large ruminants in Indonesia

The type, numbers and use of large ruminants in Indonesia are briefly reviewed. A checklist of diseases known to occur in large ruminants in Indonesia is given. The economic effect of some these diseases is discussed and four diseases (Fasciolasis, Trypanosomiasis, Mastitis and Foot and Mouth Diseases) are examined. The total economic loss from these four diseases was estimated at around US 115m although the data was based on a large number of assumptions. The requirements for improved surveillance and diagnostic tests was emphasized so that accurate data could be used to stimulate farmers to use control methods
