Sero-prevalence of brucellosis in slaughter goatsat Nsukka, Nigeria

The prevalence of brucellosis in goats at Nsukka was investigated by the use of the Rose Bengal Plate and serum agglutination tests. Seventeen (2.81 per cent) of 604 goats tested were positive to the Rose Bengal plate test while 27 (4.47 per cent) has antibodies in excess of 50 international units. Three of 96 (3.13 per cent) male and 14 of 508 (2.76 per cent) female goats were positive to the Rose Bengal test. On the other hand, four (4.17 per cent) male and 23 (4.53 per cent) female goats reacted positively to the serum agglutination test. Although the prevalence of caprine brucellosis at Nsukka was considered low, the importance of the disease was highlighted. It was also considered that the male and female goats had suffered equally and that sexes did not play any significant role in limiting the disease. Suggestions and recommendations to control caprine brucellosis in Eastern Nigeria are outlined
