Foot and mouth disease virus type distribution in India

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is endemic in India and is caused by virus types O, A and Asia 1 and their subtypes. Virus typing results have shown that type O continues to be the predominant cause of FMD outbreaks followed by types Asia 1, A and C. There has been considerable variation in the frequency of occurrence of virus in different regions during the past 9 years. Generally, type O has been comparatively more active in northern and eastern regions of the country and type C in the southern region. Type Asia 1 is fairly evenly distributed all over the country. Periodic increases in the incidence of type A have been due to increase in activity in certain regions, of subtype A22 which appears to have largely supplanted A5/10 all over the country
