Use of FAHRMX for economic research

Establishment of the dairy FAHRMX data base has provided an excellent oportunity for research regarding the cost of disease. Projects were undertaken to estimate the cost of metritis, repeat-breeder syndrome, anestrus, clinical mastitis and cystic follicles. Partial budgeting was used to measure different cost components, including losses due to culling, decreased milk production, milk withholding, veterinary charges, medicine, additional inseminations, and reproductive inefficiency. The methods for addressing each cost component are discussed, using examples from the studies cited above
