Allergic test in goats experimentally infected with B. melitensis

A protein allergen prepared from a smooth strain of Brucella abortus S-99 was used to diagnose B. melitensis (16 M) infection in three experimentally infected goats. The allergen was standardized to contain 1 mg nitrogen per ml and used in dose of 0.1 ml. The animals were injected with the allergen intracutaneously in the lower eyelid and the reaction was read within 48 hours. Infected animals showed a distinct local skin swelling within 14 days after infection, while a control remained negative. The skintest can be of practical value in diagnosing brucellosis when serological tests fail
