Use of pre-emergence herbicides during establishment of leguminous cover crops

With ever-increasing cost of labour, it is envisaged that herbicides may be used economically as adjuncts to manual weeding during the establishment of legume covers in immature oil palm and rubber plantings. Results of experiments designed to compare the performances of ten pre-emergence herbicides indicate that the most promising formulations which provided good weed control and are relatively safe to legume covers are diphenyl ether herbicides RH 2915 and RH 2512, and Tribunil 70 percent W.P. Evaluation of these chemicals on a semi-commercial scale demonstrated the economic advantages of their usage. A 20 percent reduction in expenditure on legume upkeep over 6-month period was obtained following application of RH 2915 at 1 1/4 pints per acre
