Magnetic traps for removal of iron in crude palm oil from an estate factory
Iron is a well-known pro-oxidant and hence its presence, even in the particulate form is highly undesirable since insoluble iron will eventually be dissolved by the free fatty acids present in crude palm oil. Two suitably designed permanent magnets were tested for their effectiveness in the removal of particulate iron and copper content in crude palm oil. The magnets were installed (a) in series and (b) in parallel along the production oil pipeline to the storage tank. Samples of crude oil were collected before and after the magnets and analysed for total iron, particulate iron and copper contents. The results showed that the magnetic traps were effective in removing approximately 50 percent of the particulate iron present in the crude palm oil. There was also a significant reduction in copper content of the oil after passing through the magnetic traps. Statistically the difference in effectiveness of the magnets placed in series or in parallel were not significant
