La selection du palmier a huile a l' I.R.H.O.

After a brief review of oil palm breeding in Malaysia, Congo/Léopoldville and Nigeria, the authors describe the results given at La Mé (Ivory Coast), Pobé (Dahomey) and La Dibamba (Cameroons) for inter-origin crossings between Deli (from the Far East) and pisifera or tenera from Africa. The first crosses were planted for the International Experiment. They produce an average of 5.5 tons of bunches per hectare more than the deli and two tons than the Africa x Africa strains, are well adapted to different conditions and have vegetative characteristics intermediate between deli and African stock. I.R.H.O.'s new programmes, based on the principles of recurrent and reciprocal selection, were planted at La Mé between 1960 and 1964 and include 446 crosses between 80 dura progenies and 172 tenera and pisifera progenies. A small area has been kept for selfings. A comparison is made with the present principles of breeding in Nigeria and Malaysia
