Pesticides in corn and grain-legume production in the Philippines

Of the total pesticides used in agricultural production in the Philippines, only around five percent are used in corn and grain-legume production. This low percentage indicates that majority of corn and legume farmers fail to recognize the advantages that can be derived from pesticide application. With the increasing area planted to both corn and legumes and the adoption of modern technology, pest problems are expected to intensify and new pests will evolve. Approximately 122 insect pests have been found associated with corn and grain legumes; of this group, 13 species are common pests of both crops. Organophosphate and carbamate insecticides are currently recommended to control various corn and legume pests. Fungi are the most important pathogens of both crops because the humid climatic condition in the Philippines favors fungal infection. Herbicide use is very minimal but is expected to increase as the country moves towards industrialization. Research on pesticide use, application, toxicity and chemical screeming have been and are currently being conducted. Research on downy mildew control has been given emphasis in the past years. A recent report from a preliminary testing of the chemical Ridomil as seed dressing showed complete protection of the corn plant against downy mildew attack
