Tissue culture application in Eucalyptus improvement programmes

The application of tissue culture techniques in Eucalyptus improvement programmes has been considered as one of the main alternatives for cloning of adult and/or juvenile trees. Cloning of adult and/or reverted to juvenility trees can be used for the establishment of clonal banks, seed orchards, foundation blocks, (vegetative orchard) and mass propagation, through the use of nodal culture, shoot multiplication and rooting. The cloning of juvenile material opens new perspectives for more efficient progeny evaluations. Successive in vitro shoot multiplication procedures have reverted adult material to juvenility, recovering rooting abilities and growth rates. Genetic variation has been obtained through clonal polyploidization. Somatic embryogenesis and somaclonal variation have also been considered
