Pesquisa e producao agrícola no Brasil
This paper deals with the relationship between investment in agricultural research and agricultural production in Brazil. The analysis is directed to the relative emphasis on agricultural research considering: (a) production for exportation and for domestic consumption; and (b) the relative scarcity of production resources. The methodology was based on a survey of scientific articles published in the main journals edited by public research institutions in Brazil in the period of 1927-77; bulletins and other forms fo scientific publications were also taken into consideration. The results show that the State of Sao Paulo accounts for about 62 per cent of the computed number of researches in Brazil. The efforts in making researches outside Sao Paulo became important only in the period of developed outside that State during the time horizon covered by this study. The research path was quite different between Sao Paulo and the other regions of the country. Although export products commanded a major research effort in Sao Paulo up to the 1950's, a greater emphasis was given to production for domestic consumption in the last two decades. An inverse trend was observed in the other regions, were the research directed to export products wasintensified in the period of 1970-77. The change in these research patterns seems to be a response to emerging problems in the food sector, in the case of Sao Paulo; and also a response to problems arising form the recent effort to open the economy to the foreign trade of agricultural comodities, in the case of the rest of Brazil. The results also suggest the existences of a close relationship between the volume of reseraches and yield gains obtained for most of the investigated products. Furthermore, it was evidenced a greater research effort on land saving technology, which is in agreement with the relative price behavior of production resources during most of the time period considered
