Managerial process and organizational behavior
This book is an introduction to the current state of management study and practice. It shows behavioral science and quantitative methods contribute to increased understanding of the discipline, and it further shows how the appropriate, selective use of prescriptions emerges from research concerning the managerial process and organizational behavior. We have concerned ourselves with management as a general process, to be applied in many different organizations, rather than with business management courses in other fields as well. The text material is divided into four parts. Part 1: Introductory Concepts includes a description of the evolution of management theory, a discussion of the importance and relevance of theoretical knowledge, and a description of the scientific process by which such knowledge has been developed. Part 2: Behavior in Organizations is concerned with several psychological and sociological processes that are relevant to the practice of management. Part 3: Organizational Structure and Design deals with both the design of and management practices in complex organizations. Here we are primarily concerned with how objectives are established, policies defined, and work divided; we also discuss some of the unique problems faced by managers whose subordinates are professionals. Part 4: Organizational Dynamics focuses on the dynamic aspects of organizations as they change and are changed over time
