The importance of grazing for the seasonal, freshwatermarsh at Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica
Recent efforts in the 80's to preserve two tropical wetland ecosystems on opposite sides of the globe, both internationally renowned for their importance to migrating and resident waterfowl, failed to continue to provide the necessary habitat to waterfowl, even after designation as protected wildlands of the state, for one simple rason: the forced cessation of cattle grazing of each marsh. In both cases, in a sincere effort to protect a valuable ecosystem, just the opposite effect was achieved, with severe consequences for the birdlife that depended on that resource
