Animal production in Mexico: constraints, problems and researchable topics

Mexico is among the10 largest producers in teh worldof beef, poultry, eggs and honey, and among the top 20 countries in the production of milk, pork and goat meat. It is also one of thealrgets exports of live cattle, (more tham 1.3 million/year). Very modern producers and production systems coexist with traditional small producers, so there is a wide spectrum of technology in use, with a variety of products, systems and ecological conditions in which production occurs. In an analysis of current research attention on different production systems, in which experts' opinion regarding the systems' future importance and their dependence on the national research systems were contrasted, it was determined that there is a need to give more research support to goats, beef, poultry and home-yard diversified systems. The national use of grasslands in bothe tropical and arid zones, and in ths systems promoting, income and food availability and better use of labor in small producers' household, were also defined as being important.
