Biotechnology research, development at IRFA/CIRAD: an overview of biotechnology activities of IRFA/CIRAD in the West Indies

There are two IRFA/CIRAD research stations in the West Indies, in Guadeloupe and in Martinique. Research in agronomy, phytopathology and physiology, is planned to respond to problems of local producers. Long-term studies are currently under way in plant genetics with more fundamental objectives. Three main plant improvement projects are bein carried out in the IRFA stations on banana, pineapple and citrus. Information on, for example, biotechnologies for evaluation of genetic resources; in vitro culture applied to the valorization of genetic resources, banana embryo rescue; in vitro duplication of diploid clines of banana by colchicine treatment; and in vitro androgenesis in banana is presented.
