Beekeeping in Puerto Rico

Background information on Puerto Rico is presented together with the status of beekeeping industry and its two annual honey harvests; and the facilities available to buy apiculture equipment. The paper points out that three quarters of the island's honey consumption is imported from the Dominican Republic at high cost. The major problem is a lack of organization and direction among the beekeepers even within the Asociation de Apicultures de Puerto Rico. There is great resistance to the adoption of modern beekeeping techniques and the best beekeeping areas, the drier parts of the island, are under utilized. To date, present projects include the diffusion of technical information on colony management for honey production and pollination through on-site visits to beekeepers. (MIBA)
