Cadmium newsletter

In this third issue of the Cadmium Newsletter we wish to share with you the participatory methodology that CRC and MOCCA-LWR has developed to mitigate cadmium (Cd) contamination of cocoa in Latin America and the Caribbean. Following the puzzle example, where understanding and solving the problem of Cd contamination depends on identifying the missing puzzle pieces, we first conducted a gap analysis survey of all cacao stakeholders in the six MOCCA project countries (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Peru and Ecuador). To clarify results and support the development of a participatory approach that could help overcome research and testing gaps, we conducted virtual workshops, involving different stakeholders from Central American countries. As a following step and aiming to bring about greater cooperation among countries to overcome the Cd challenge, we conducted a virtual round table, bringing together private and public sector participants as well as non-governmental organizations from the prioritized MOCCA countries. We also had participants from Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. In this third issue of the Cadmium Newsletter, we will outline the methodological approach that MOCCA adopted to support countries, summarize the lessons learned from the gap analysis study, and provide conclusions drawn from the roundtable. In this participatory approach, your feedback is welcome as we move forward to overcome this common challenge that affects us all.
