Rice Production and Trade in Latin America Challenges Towards the Future

This article presents some reflections on the future of production and trade in Latin America. It begins with a brief analysis of the socio-economic environment of recent years and its impact on agriculture as a whole, where rice production in many countries has suffered along with other crops due to the combined effect of a sudden withdrawal of protection measures and the consequent fall in profitability, dumping of international prices and the low exchange rate of the dollar. Although increasing competitiveness, defined as the capacity of a country's internal production to improve its participation in the internal or external market, involves several components, the only genuine dimension of improvement has to do with comparative advantages, where change Technological, as a cost reduction factor, is an essential component.
