Los impactos de un proyecto silvopastoril en el cambio de uso de la tierra y alivio de la pobreza en el paisaje ganadero de Matiguás, Nicaragua

It is argued that payments for environmental services (PES) and technical assistance (TA) may improve living conditions of the poorest producers. We studied the effect of PES and TA on land use changes and their impacts on productive and socio-economic characteristics of farmers at three poverty levels in Matiguás, Nicaragua. A total of 72 cattle farms with PES were selected, and a structured survey was carried out to gather socioeconomic data. Cattle farmers were classified into three levels of poverty (non-poor, less poor and more poor) according to social and economic indicators adapted to the study zone. The variables evaluated were accumulated PES, land use change, and farm productivity and financial indicators. The accumulated PES per hectare of less poor and more poor farmers were significantly higher than those of non-poor farmers (63, 60 and 32 USS ha-1, respectively). The poorest farmers undertook important land use changes, including the reduction of 20 per cent of the degraded pasture area, with an increase in the area under sustainable land uses, such as improved pasture with high tree density and fodder bank with shrubs and/or trees and live fences. There were few differences between groups of farmers with PES and PES + TA with respect to increments in productivity and financial indicators. At all poverty levels, there was an increase in milk production per hectare, gross income from sales of cattle products per hectare and household income per capita. We conclude that PES is a valuable tool to promote sustainable land uses in cattle farms irrespective of the poverty level.
