Efecto del etefón en el crecimiento, floración y producción de tres cultivares de melón en Cañas, Guanacaste

Effect of ethephon on growth, flowering and yield of melon in Canas, Guanacaste. The effect of ethephon (2-chloroetylphosphonic acid) on vegetative growth, sex expression and yield of melon was evaluated in Canas, Guanacaste. Ethephon treatments consisted of 0,150,300,450 and 600 ppm and were applied at the four true leaf stage on the andromonoecius cultivars 'Cantaloupe 5J-45', 'Cantaloupe 21' and 'Improved Tam Dew'. Both internode length in the main stem and the number of branches per plant of the three cultivars were proportionately reduced as the ethephon doses increased. All treatments when compared to control (0 ppm), promoted the number of hermaphroditic flowers of the three cultivars. The best treatment causing this effect was ethephon at 300 ppm. Male flowering pattern was delayed and redu- ced in number as ethephon concentrations increased. The hormone did not significantly affect the fruit size and shape and the yield in any of the three cultivars. A low fruit set related to hermaphroditic flowering was observed at the highest ethephon concentrations.
