Biomass and chemical content of El Verde Lower Montane Rain Forest Plants

The nondestructive estimation of the biomass and the nutrient inventory in the El Verde forest was based on sample weighing and analysis of over 100 trees and regressions that separately treated three groupings of dicotyledon trees and palms. Logarithm of height for Palms), diameter at 1.3 m (for minor trees), and diameter and height jointly (for major trees and Shrubs) were the predictors used for logarithms of tree mass. Resulting regressions were used with the corrected preirradiation stand data from the Waterways Experiment Station to give estimates averaging 32,492, 20,919, and 26,928 g/m? (= metric tons /km2) for the Radiation Center, the South Control Center, and the North Cut Center, respectively; 10 times these. numbers gives kilograms per hectare, Nonpalm trees and shrubs Included four components: leaves, branches, boles, and roots >0.5 cm in diameter, which (for the three centers averaged together) were estimated as 788, 3677, 15,345, and 6480 g/m2, respectively. Corresponding estimates for the Radiation Center (1018, 6017, 29,364, and 12,422 g/m2) were highest for nine subtotal areas; these figures may be exaggerated (especially for foliage) because of extrapolation of regressions lo size classes larger than those represented by sample trees. These estimates may approximate the natural rain forest condition more closely than the average Figures, which are affected by former harvesting of large trees. Nutrient content was calculated for the Radiation Center with results for leaves, which have relatively rapid turnover, in grams per square. meter as follows: potassium, 5.2; calcium, 5.6; magnestum, 2.0; sodium, 11.8; and Phosphorus, 0.7.
