Crest farming: a strategy for research and design of cropping systems

The concepts and philosophy contained in this paper are identical to those presented orally to the Seminario Internacional de Investigación en Sistemas de Producción en Haba, March 13-17, 1989, at Pasto, Colombia. The strategy outlined in this paper was originally developed specifically for dryland farming in Montana, which is part of the Northern Great Plains-Intermountain Region of the United States (Sims, 1989). However, it is offered for consideration by agronomic scientists and administrators working in the Andean regions of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela to augment their participation in the development of sustainable, lower input cropping systems for use by farmers in their respective areas.
