Improving forest governance in Belize: stepping stones towards community forest management
In order to determine the environment and potential for community forest management in Belize, three main activities were carried out during this investigation: a) the development of sustainable forest management (SFM) standards, b) an evaluation of sustainable forest management in Belize, and c) an assessment of community capitals in three communities (Conejo, Sundaywood and Boom Creek villages) in the Toledo District of Belize.The community capitals assessment determined that in all three communities the weakest capitals were financial and physical while social, cultural and natural were the strongest. The need to acquire specific forestry skills and knowledge was recognized by the communities. In the final analysis, it was determined that the current policy, legislative and institutional framework is not favorable for community forest management, but in spite of this, two communities in Toledo have succeeded in developing sound SFM plans for their community forests.
