Cocoa production and witches' broom in Bahia, Brazil

This article analyzes the 1978/79-2006/07 series of cocoa production in Bahia based on the production potential of coca trees (measured by cherelles production) under the influence of the environment (witches'broom disease, management and climate). It has as hypothesis that witches'broom does not explain the declining tendency of the production potential of plantations along the period 1978/79-1995-96. Parameters estimates of the adjusted curves for the periods 1978/79-1992/93 and 1978/79-1995/96, before and after the beginning of pod losses due to witches'broom, was done through procedures of regression analyses. The hypotheses of differences among the slopes (p=0.7840)and intercepts of the curves (p=0.8734) were denied. Therefore, the reduction of cherelles number per plant is confirmed in the period 1978/79-1995/96, period that responds for the fall of cocoa production en Bahia. Also it is not sustained the hypothesis that the witches'broom effect significantly altered, in that period, the declining tendency of the production potential of cocoa plantations. Furthemore, in regard to the environment effect, it is observed that the close relationship among cherelle production and actual price of the product, credit and fertilized area, air temperature, rainfall and pod-rot disease help to explain the negative effect of the absence of management of the potential production of the plantation.
