Bean advanced breeding lines behavoir in monoculture and intercropped with corn

Different bean breeding lines of the commercial groups "Carioca", "Mulatinho", Purple and Black were evaluated in monoculture and intercropped with corn, in the ecosystems of coastal table lands and semiarid region in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, in 2003. The study aimed to establish the most promising materials for the regional agriculture. In all cases randomized block design with four replications was used. When intercropped with the exception of the Carioca group, in the other groups the lines had a behavoir proving that selection based on monoculture is not adquate for intercropping. It was demonstrated that the Semi arid region in better adapted for bean cultivation. Various breeding lines, from the different groups, showed a good adaptation in the two regions.
